Take a Child Outside Week at Forever Florida - September 24-30, 2012
Please join Florida EcoSafaris as we celebrate Take A Child Outside Week, a national initiative spearheaded by the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences, which kicks off Monday, September 24 and runs through Sunday, September 30. Designed to help break down obstacles that keep children from exploring the natural world, the week encourages children and adults to spend time together outdoors. It was inspired by Richard Louv’s book “Last Child in the Woods,” which identifies the benefits of outdoor experiences for children and addresses some of the problems of what he terms “Nature Deficit Disorder,” such as increased feelings of stress, trouble paying attention and feelings of being disconnected from the world.
On the Take A Child Outside web site, adults are encouraged to make a pledge to take a child outside during the week and chart their location on a digital map. Florida EcoSafaris is featured as one of the partners on the map and is providing opportunities for people to get outside. Currently, all 50 US states and four foreign countries actively participate in Take A Child Outside Week with over 300 organizations participating nationwide including parks, museums, science centers, and many other organizations interested in reconnecting children and nature.
Stop by the main reception desk in the Forever Florida Visitor Center with your child from September 24 to 30, 2010 to pick up a free activity kit such as the "Make a Spider Web Kit". Spiders are essential to keeping insect populations in balance. With this fun activity, your child will construct their very own spider web and design thier own spider! They can determine what their spider eats, and name it too! (ie. The “Cotton-candy” spider, eats only sweet insects, and attracts anyone within a 10mi radius who is eating cotton candy. This unique spider’s web looks as though it has come directly out of a cotton candy machine; it even looks pink and blue!) We can't wait to see what creative spider your child comes up with as we participate in this important and fun effort to get kids outside!
For more information about the event, please contact: Kelly Wagner, Director of Education at Education@FloridaEcoSafaris.com or call 407.433.5485.

13th Annual Patrick Smith Day - November 2012
Get ready for some Fall fun at our Patrick Smith Day festival celebrating all things Florida. The popular annual event is in honor of Patrick Smith, a great storyteller, author and historian who's been recognized as "the greatest living Floridian" by the Florida historical society. Quite a title, right? He's written some amazing books about the pioneer days of Florida inlcuding his most well known historical epic "A Land Remembered".

Take the special "A Land Remembered Coach Safari" for an amazing inside look at the setting for so many of Patrick Smith's stories. Plus, in the spirit of adventure, it's a perfect day to experience the new Cypress Canopy Cycle, specially priced for the day!
This year's festival has a full lineup of fun including Bluegrass and Folk Music, storytellers, special Florida heritage cattle and horse demonstrations and a keynote address by noted historian and author Harvey Oyer III. Plus, get a head start on your holiday shopping with local artists, artisans, authors and vendors with unique gifts to browse.
